
Detroit Lions Tackle Hunger: Food Drive Brings Hope to Community
DETROIT, MI – April 15, 2025 – In a powerful show of unity and compassion, the Detroit Lions have stepped off the field and into the heart of their city with their latest community initiative: the “Tackle Hunger” food drive. The event, held at Ford Field this past weekend, brought thousands of fans, volunteers, and local residents together to combat food insecurity in the Detroit area.
Partnering with Gleaners Community Food Bank and local nonprofit organizations, the Lions rallied their fan base to donate non-perishable food items, hygiene products, and monetary contributions. The results were staggering: over 80,000 pounds of food collected and nearly $150,000 raised—enough to provide more than 600,000 meals to families in need.
Lions linebacker and community ambassador Alex Anzalone said the initiative is about more than just giving back—it’s about standing shoulder to shoulder with the people of Detroit. “This city shows up for us every single game,” Anzalone said. “Now it’s our turn to show up for them. No one should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.”
The event featured appearances by current and former Lions players, cheerleaders, and team mascot Roary, who greeted fans as they dropped off donations. Kids enjoyed interactive games and face painting, while adults took part in raffles and live music performances. In a city where nearly 30% of households face food insecurity, the event offered not just supplies—but a much-needed sense of hope and togetherness.
Team President Rod Wood highlighted the importance of using the Lions’ platform for change. “We have a responsibility that goes beyond football,” Wood said. “Detroit is our home. When our community is struggling, we’re going to step up.”
Local families in attendance expressed gratitude for the initiative. “This means everything to us,” said Maria Jennings, a single mother of three. “It’s hard right now. Groceries are expensive, and every bit helps. Seeing the Lions care like this—it lifts you up.”
Beyond the immediate donations, the Lions are also launching a month-long campaign to raise awareness and support for food insecurity.
