The Iceman Cometh: Kimi Räikkönen Reflects on Family Life, F1, and His Son’s Racing Ambitions

Kimi Räikkönen, one of Formula 1’s most iconic figures, has opened up about life after retirement, offering a rare glimpse into his family life and thoughts on the future of motorsport. Known for his cool demeanor, often referred to as “The Iceman,” Räikkönen made his mark in the sport with a career spanning almost two decades, and his blunt, no-nonsense approach to the press made him a fan favorite. However, it’s his role as a father now that he seems most passionate about.

In a candid interview, the Finnish driver spoke about how his life has shifted since his retirement at the end of the 2021 Formula 1 season. Now living in Switzerland with his wife, former F1 grid girl Minttu, and their two children, Kimi says he’s found joy in simpler, quieter activities. “It’s nice to be at home, spend time with my family, and just enjoy life without the constant travel and pressure of racing,” Räikkönen said, in his typically straightforward fashion.

However, that doesn’t mean the racing bug has completely left him. Despite stepping away from the F1 grid, Kimi has remained deeply connected to the motorsport world, not as a driver, but as a proud father of a budding racing talent. His son, Robin, is following in his father’s footsteps, taking his first steps into karting, a move that has garnered attention both within the Räikkönen family and the motorsport community.

“Of course, I support Robin. He loves racing, and it’s something he’s really passionate about,” Kimi said, offering insight into how he balances his family life with his son’s racing ambitions. “I don’t push him, though. He has to want it for himself. He knows the effort it takes, and I think he’s getting that understanding early.”

Kimi’s approach to his son’s racing career seems rooted in the same philosophy that guided his own. He’s always stressed that racing, for him, was never about the fame or glory, but about the love of the sport itself. “If Robin enjoys it and works hard, that’s the most important thing,” he added.

While Kimi’s reputation as a man of few words is well-documented, those close to him know that his family means the world to him. As for his own racing career, Räikkönen is content with the legacy he leaves behind—one that includes a World Championship with Ferrari in 2007, 21 Grand Prix wins, and a reputation for being unapologetically himself. But now, he finds fulfillment in watching his son start his own journey in the motorsport world.

“It’s not easy, but it’s fun,” Kimi reflected, speaking about the pressures that come with motorsport. “Racing is a tough business, and there’s a lot to learn. I try to give Robin advice when I can, but ultimately, it’s up to him to find his way.”

As the motorsport world keeps its eye on the next generation of stars, Kimi Räikkönen remains one of the sport’s most beloved and intriguing personalities. Even in retirement, his story continues to evolve, now with the possibility of seeing his son carve out his own path in racing. Whether Robin will achieve the heights of his father’s success remains to be seen, but for now, Kimi is enjoying the ride from the sidelines, supporting his family and embracing the next chapter of his life with the same quiet confidence that defined his F1 career.
