Kernersville Road: Multi-Vehicle Crash Causes Delay and Injuries
Kernersville Road, a busy thoroughfare in the heart of Forsyth County, North Carolina, became the scene of a serious multi-vehicle accident on the afternoon of March 17, 2025. The crash, which occurred just before 3:00 p.m., involved at least five vehicles, resulting in significant traffic delays and multiple reported injuries. Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene to provide medical assistance and begin clearing the wreckage.
According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, the accident occurred near the intersection of Kernersville Road and Old Greensboro Road, an area known for heavy traffic, particularly during peak hours. Authorities have confirmed that the cause of the crash is still under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest that slippery road conditions due to recent rain may have contributed to the collision.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with debris scattered across both lanes of traffic. Several vehicles, including a sedan, a pickup truck, and an SUV, appeared to have been involved in the pileup. One of the vehicles overturned, while others sustained significant damage to their front ends. The crash caused a temporary shutdown of both lanes of traffic, leading to a backup that stretched for several miles in both directions.
Local authorities issued an immediate traffic alert, advising commuters to avoid the area if possible. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) also sent crews to assist with traffic control and ensure the safe removal of the damaged vehicles. At the height of the incident, drivers were rerouted through nearby streets, further exacerbating the traffic congestion in surrounding neighborhoods.
While the full extent of the injuries has not yet been confirmed, emergency medical services (EMS) reported that at least three individuals were transported to local hospitals. The injuries ranged from minor to moderate, with some victims requiring immediate care for broken bones and lacerations. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.
The crash has raised concerns about road safety in the area, particularly during adverse weather conditions. With the region experiencing frequent rain and cooler temperatures in recent weeks, local authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution when navigating busy roads. “Speeding and driving too closely to other vehicles can be especially dangerous during wet conditions,” said Sergeant Michelle Roberts of the Winston-Salem Police Department. “We encourage drivers to slow down, maintain a safe distance, and be vigilant for changing weather conditions.”
In the aftermath of the crash, the NCDOT has committed to assessing the road conditions and exploring ways to improve safety measures along Kernersville Road. Additionally, the Winston-Salem Police Department will be conducting a full investigation to determine if any of the involved drivers were under the influence or distracted at the time of the incident.
As the cleanup continues and the investigation unfolds, authorities have reminded commuters to plan for continued delays in the area. Drivers are encouraged to use alternative routes such as Highway 66 or Country Club Road to bypass the scene of the crash. The road is expected to be fully reopened by late evening, although traffic may remain congested for several hours.
This crash serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on busy roads, particularly in inclement weather, and underscores the need for increased awareness and caution behind the wheel.
